Is It Worth The Cost of Commuting?

According to a recent U.S. Census, 45.2% of New Jersey residents work outside of their county of residence. If you are among this growing percentage of out-of-county commuters, you may be thinking about looking for a job that is located closer to home. Or, you may be considering purchasing a home situated closer to work. Amidst growing concerns about escalating gas prices, it is no wonder that the cost of commuting to work is a mounting concern.
Let’s consider the following scenario:
You’ve been offered a job that pays more than you’re making now but requires a longer commute. Have you considered the following?
- actual monetary implications?
- the fact that increased driving time equals less leisure time?
- potential health implications?
- environmental concerns?
Lucky for you, if decisions like this are keeping you up at night . . . sleep tight, your worries are over! The new Commuting Cost Calculator featured on my website will help you decide:
- if taking a new job paying $600 a month more than you are currently earning, but requires 30 miles of additional travel, is a smart move
- if buying a $350,000 home located 10 miles from work, or a $275,000 home situated 30 miles from work, is truly the home of your dreams
- if adding to your commute to work will cost you more than money in the long run, in terms of lost leisure time, decreased family and / or social connections
- if feeling well is being compromised by health factors associated with long commutes, i.e., increased stress, higher blood pressure, added eye strain, or intensified back and neck pain
- if getting paid to work the hours you spend driving could equate to significant financial earnings, hence fewer financial headaches
- if increased mileage means increased wear and tear on your car, equating to “down the road” cost factors
- if caring about the environmental impact of increased mileage is a concern you want to eradicate
