Attention Asbury Park Press:
A recent article about professional resume writing services appeared in your business section last Sunday. As a Certified Professional Resume Writer and Career Coach serving clients since 1989, as well as a 1976 journalism graduate and former advertising manager and promotional writer, I have to set the record straight.
It is true that many individuals hang a shingle out their door and call themselves resume writers. The same is true of a host of professionals. However, there are credentials that make a resume writer certified and successful. For one, there is a stringent test one must pass before claiming to be a Certified Professional Resume Writer and Career Coach. I, for one, have passed this test and have successfully served hundreds of thousands of clients. Many truthful testimonials appear on my website: www.keytosuccessresumes.com .
However, websites are flooded with resumes from people unqualified to write them. Do you have any idea how long it takes to properly assess and interview a client, then write a compelling cover letter and resume? As the name of my company, A Word's Worth implies, each word must be a "stroke of genius" so that clients can get their interviews and land job offers, particularly in this economy.
The task of hiring authorities to review, evaluate, and respond to resumes is immense, increasing the likelihood that resumes will not be reviewed in a thoughtful manner. It is highly likely that many qualified individuals will be ignored because their resumes are poorly written.
So what is a job seeker to do to raise his or her visibility above the crowd?
First, talk to the resume writer. Understand his or her experience, work ethic, and commitment to serving the client.
Then, meet with the resume writer in person. How can the Certified Professional Resume Writer / Career Coach know all that he or she needs to know about you without meeting you?
Finally, blindly sending a resume has a low probability of getting the attention it deserves. The job-search process is not a flurry of activity followed by a wait and see attitude. Rather, the job search process is the result of a comprehensive strategy, carefully considered, with multiple proactive steps leading to the interview. Networking through colleagues, relatives, online groups, and business and social forums is imperative. I repeatedly tell my clients that 65% of all jobs are attained through networking!
By hiring a resume writer who is not truly committed to serving the client is a huge mistake. However, taking the time to hire the right resume writer, then taking the proactive steps to network and submit the resume and cover letter to job niche websites (which I happen to have at my fingertips) dramatically increases the client's chance for success.
If an individual has $200 to burn and is looking for a quick fix, I suggest gambling in Atlantic City or Las Vegas. If, however, a job is what an individual is looking for, hire a qualified resume writer who will meet with and assess the client's unique attributes. The return on investment is far greater.
